“I Dreamt of Netherfield” is a legitimately scary Pride & Prejudice ghost story

I Dreamt of Netherfield: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Mei Wei Lin

In this Pride & Prejudice adaptation, Elizabeth, Darcy, and Caroline Bingley are pulled into a paranormal mystery surrounding mysterious events long past at Netherfield Park. This is a ghost story where individual chapters are told from various characters’ viewpoints, which I enjoyed, helping to build suspense and drive the mysteries of Netherfield forward. This book was gripping and is legitimately scary at times! Not quite nightmare-inducing, but on par with TV horror.

The cast of classic characters in this story are mostly limited to those at Netherfield when Elizabeth comes to nurse Jane at the start of the original story. Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Caroline Bingley are all given a natural treatment, where none feel like exaggerations of Jane Austen’s originals. Mei Wei Lin is a talented storyteller and I always enjoy her work.
